Made of imagination.

This year has absolutely flown by! I have no idea how it’s April already and how it’s taken me until April to go to my first gig of the year *Bows head in shame*.

Last night was the official launch of Xperia, Sony’s smartphone brand so we headed to Mayfair (Xperia S in hand!) to see Labrinth and the dance group, iLuminate perform.

I absolutely bloody love One Mayfair, acoustically the music sounds phenomenal, not only that but it’s a converted church - #amazeballs. The historic landmark has been beautifully restored so it still maintains that majestic feel yet it works brilliantly for gigs. I love being in places where you keep spotting something new from stain glass windows, to stone walls, chandeliers. Beaut.

If you’re a regular reader of my blog you’ll know Labrinth wouldn’t be my first choice for a gig stop off, a British rapper? You gotta be kidding me!

I take it back, all of it! Maybe it was One Mayfair that gave him that added boost but he absolutely nailed the set, as soon as he started thrashing out the guitar riffs I was sold. Being a musician today is about having a little something else – it’s not enough to be able to rap or to sing… you need something to set you out from the rest.

For Labrinth, that’s the wide range of instruments that he plays and integrates into his live performances, his energy and charisma. Random fact, he also owns a restaurant! Everyone loves a random fact, right?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a rock chick. The pop-rap era that we’re in at the moment is just a phase, he’s helping the cause and raising awareness for sure but mainstream never really has longevity.

Singles are one thing but maintaining that interest is a hard task in the pop-rap genre, he doesn’t seem worried though, he said himself that he’s a ‘groundbreaker’ so we’ll see how that works out for him.

He had a real awkward moment when he said, ‘Fuck the corporate world,’ followed by the lyrics to his single, Earthquake, ‘Let me apologise to the shirts and ties’… yep, at least 80% of the people in the room were corporate as we’d all come from work, for a work event, in our shirts and ties. That wasn’t fully thought through!

The big show stopped for me was iLumiate, I’m a bit of a sucker for shows like Britain’s Got Talent - I love seeing a good dance group, there performance was insane, matching glowing outfits – Diversity eat your heart out!

I’m now fully back in gig-mode! Bring on a summer filled with festivals and sweaty gigs. Yum.
